Line 5 tram Montpellier: map and journey times

December 20, 2025 marks a historic milestone for transportation in Montpellier: the official inauguration of the new Tram Line 5 is scheduled for that day, with festivities starting at 11 a.m. to celebrate its opening with residents and visitors.

A strategic route at the heart of the metropolis

Line 5 complements the existing network by serving essential neighborhoods in Montpellier and several neighboring municipalities:

👉 It will connect Clapiers to Lavérune and its famous Paulette roundabout in the west of Montpellier over approximately 16 km, with 27 stations distributed along the route.

Here are some key stations:

  • Clapiers

  • Montferrier-sur-Lez

  • Agropolis

  • CNRS – Lunaret Zoo

  • Paul Valéry University

  • Saint-Éloi – Doctor Pezet

  • Boutonnet – Arts City

  • Philippidès Stadium

  • Albert 1st – Botanical Gardens

  • Peyrou – Triumphal Arch

  • Saint-Guilhem – Courreau

  • Clemenceau Park

  • May 8, 1945 Square

  • Creative City – Montcalm Park

  • Ovalie

  • Bouisses Park

  • Grès de Montpellier

💡 The line crosses university areas, research centers, residential neighborhoods, and developing zones, helping to connect the metropolis more smoothly.

📈 Expected ridership: up to 80,000 passengers per day

With its opening, Line 5 is designed to absorb a significant share of daily commuting: approximately 80,000 people per day are expected to use this new line, thanks to a frequency of one tram every 6 minutes and a travel time of approximately 45 minutes between the two main terminals.

It is a genuine response to the growing need for soft, sustainable mobility in a metropolis that encourages the use of public transportation rather than cars.

A design inspired by nature

Artist Barthélémy Toguo, who designed Line 5, drew inspiration from nature and vines, which are very present in our region, to create the design of the new tram cars.

🆓 Free public transportation in Montpellier: how it works

Since December 21, 2023, public transportation (buses and trams) has been free for all residents of the Montpellier Méditerranée Metropolis: a rare measure in France aimed at promoting the use of public transportation, reducing car traffic, and encouraging greener mobility.

💡 What this means in practice

  • Complete free access for metropolis residents.

  • This measure also applies to the new Line 5 from its opening.

  • Visitors and non-residents of the Metropolis can travel on the network according to the tariff rules in effect on the TAM website.
