Valmagne Abbey — point of interest
About
Nestled between Villeveyrac and Montagnac - 50 minutes from Saint-Clément-de-Rivière and 35 from Montpellier - in the heart of a vast wine estate, Valmagne Abbey stands as one of those jewels blending heritage, nature and gastronomy. Founded in 1139 by the powerful lords of Cabrières, with the support of Raymond Trencavel, Viscount of Béziers, it ranks among the most emblematic Cistercian monuments in southern France. Legend has it that the abbey was defended by Saint Louis.
A Bit of History At its inception, the abbey was first Benedictine; but in 1159, it was attached to the Cistercian Order, becoming a daughter house of Bonnevaux Abbey. Thanks to its lands, vineyards, and privileges, it experienced a period of great prosperity between the 12th and 14th centuries. However, it was not spared: the Wars of Religion, the Revolution, abandonment, and then conversion to wine production marked its destiny.
Why visit it: The abbey is remarkably well preserved: the abbey church, the cloister galleries, the fountain and the ancient monastic buildings form an ensemble that is both imposing and imbued with serenity. While strolling through the site, you have the sensation of traveling back in time, while being comfortably immersed in a living place.
On-site experience
On the program: a guided or self-guided tour that allows you to discover the different architectural periods, from Romanesque art to elegant Gothic touches.
Then, a tasting of wine and olive oil produced on-site: the abbey's vineyard, spanning several hectares, still cultivates today the vines upon which the monks laid the first foundations of this terroir.
For families or curious visitors of all ages, a fun scavenger hunt (tested and approved by 2 Escape Games enthusiasts!) is offered: in 1.5 to 2 hours, children and adults alike can explore the premises while having fun and learning about the site's history.
Temporary exhibitions change regularly on the site.
And what about dining? Also on-site, the Restaurant Vigneron, run by chef Antoine Herkenrath, offers traditional and authentic cuisine in a setting steeped in history. Guests can enjoy exceptional products, fresh and local, carefully prepared to offer the best at a fair price. A fine balance between gastronomic quality and accessibility.
In summary, the Abbaye de Valmagne is a place where heritage, nature, and sensory pleasure come together. Whether you visit for a tour, a tasting, or a refined meal, you will discover a site steeped in history, marked by tranquility and beauty. An excellent address to recommend, particularly for your clients during property viewings in the area or for a moment of relaxation between appointments.
