About
A medieval village perched at the gates of Pic Saint-Loup
Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles is a small village of 532 inhabitants nestled on the southern foothills of Pic Saint-Loup, at an average altitude of 163 m (up to 459 m on the heights of the municipality). On clear days, from the narrow streets, the plain opens up all the way to Montpellier. No traffic, no neon signs: simply stone houses and the silence of the garrigue.
A story written in stone
In the 12th century, monks from the abbey of Aniane founded a priory and built the Romanesque church of the Nativity of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Two centuries later, during the Hundred Years' War, the inhabitants fortified it to protect themselves from bands of mercenaries: they raised the choir, added watchtowers, and pierced arches with machicolations.
This fortified church has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1925; it ranks among the rare examples of religious defensive architecture still visible in the Hérault. Beside it, a medieval bridge spans the former route that once led towards Sommières.
Authentic, and yet far from isolated
Here is what surprises visitors: they have the feeling of being at the end of the world, when in reality, everything is only ten or twenty minutes away by car.
Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers (shops, bakery, pharmacy): 8 to 10 km, 10 to 15 minutes via D17
Nearest supermarket: 2.6 km
Saint-Gély-du-Fesc (Intermarché, schools, services): 12 to 15 km, approximately 20 minutes
Highway A750 exit: 15 to 18 km, 18 to 22 minutes
Place de la Comédie in Montpellier: approximately 21 km, 25 to 30 minutes outside peak hours
Montpellier Saint-Roch Station: 22 to 24 km
The main roads (D17, D17E2, D986) serve the village without difficulty. For families seeking a rural setting without moving away from shops and work, the location ranks among the most relevant in the north of Montpellier.
What we love doing there
Park the car at the entrance to the village, then walk up to the fortified church. Make a tour of the ramparts, come back down through the narrow streets. Set off into the garrigue on foot or by mountain bike: the Pic Saint-Loup trails start just a few meters away. And every May 1st, don't miss the Flower Festival, which transforms the entire village center into an open-air market.

Alpaca Immobilier's Take
We regularly visit Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles, and the effect is always the same: we have the feeling of being hours away from Montpellier, when we are only 25 minutes from the city center. For the buyers we assist who are looking for a real village, peace and quiet, and a view, while still having access to the schools and shops of Saint-Mathieu or Saint-Gély just ten minutes away, it is an address we carefully keep in our notebook.
