Flower Festival of Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles: What We Saw This Year

Flower Festival of Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles: our May 1st in pictures
Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles, population 532. Most of the time, the narrow streets are empty. May 1st changes all that. The medieval village perched on the foothills of Pic Saint-Loup welcomes over 100 exhibitors for its annual Flower Festival. We were there this year. Here's what we saw and what you need to know if you go in 2027.
37 editions, always the same formula
The festival is in its 37th edition this year. It is organized by the Events Committee and the Cuculles en Fête association. On the exhibitor side: nurserymen, florists, ceramicists, potters, woodturners, local producers. Atmosphere-wise: zero staging, zero glitter. That's what makes its strength.
The Flower Bearers' Procession
It's the moment that captures hearts. At one point during the day, the children of the village parade through the alleyways, their arms full of bouquets. The Flower Bearers. The parents follow, filming, the shopkeepers applaud. The sequence is brief. For those discovering the event for the first time, it's probably the most beautiful moment of the day.
What You Will Find There
Flowers. Perennials, Mediterranean plants adapted to scrubland, vegetable plants, aromatics. Everything you need to fill the garden for May and June.
Local products. Wines from Pic Saint-Loup, honeys, olive oils, goat cheeses, cured meats, sourdough breads.
Craftsmanship. Pottery, wood turning, ceramics. Live demonstrations.
A refreshment stand and catering on-site, run by village volunteers.
With children, it's easy
Everything is planned for the little ones: carousel, pony rides for children up to 10 years old, mini-farm, wooden games, workshops. A walk through the garrigue is also offered at 10am, followed by a tasting upon return. Your children won't get bored while you browse between the stands.
The only point to note: the parking
The village is small, the streets narrow. Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., traffic becomes congested. Free parking is signposted at the entrances but they fill up quickly.
What we do:
Arrive before 10 a.m. At 9 a.m., the village is still quiet.
Park further away without hesitation. The last five hundred meters on foot are well worth the detour, guaranteed view.
Finish the afternoon on site. Around 4 p.m., the atmosphere becomes pleasant again. The end-of-day light on the village stones is superb.
The journey from Montpellier
21 km from Place de la Comédie. 25 to 30 minutes via D17 and D986, outside peak hours. For residents of Saint-Gély-du-Fesc, Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers or Castelnau-le-Lez, allow 10 to 20 minutes.
Why We're Talking About This (or "Why We're Discussing This" - depending on context)
Many buyers we work with are looking to settle north of Montpellier. The first question isn't about the price per square meter. It's: "Is life pleasant there? Is there anything happening there?"
The Flower Festival of Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles answers precisely this question. The village lives. One day a year, intensely. The rest of the time, at its own pace.
For other places we love in north Montpellier, browse our address book or the hikes around Pic Saint-Loup. And if you're looking for a house or land in the area, we can discuss it whenever you'd like.
